Creative Ways to Style a Scarf

Want to learn how to wear a scarf?

You’ve come to the right place.

Unlike shirts, dresses, trousers, shoes, or jeans that come in a pre-styled form, and all you have to do is wear them, draping a scarf is a bit complex. It is a versatile piece of cloth that can be tied, draped, knotted, and styled in countless ways.

So, whether you want to put together an effortless casual look or an elegant chic outfit for your next meeting, a well-chosen scarf can be the ultimate fashion ally. Keep reading as I share five creative ways to style a scarf.

Try the Classic Drape

When it comes to scarf styling, simplicity is the key to elegance. Just casually drape the scarf around your neck, letting it hang loosely on both sides. I find this timeless and effortless style pairs well with almost all outfits, including chic blazers, sleeveless dresses, and cozy sweaters.

Toss It Around Your Neck

For a stylish yet carefree look, the scarf-tossing technique is something you will love as much as I do! Start by looping the scarf around your neck once, then let one end hang longer. This scarf styling approach adds a touch of flair to your outfit, especially casual ensembles. Play with prints and textures to infuse personality into your look.

My Advice: If you are bored with the simple look, try tossing one side of the scarf over the far shoulder, or both ends backward.

Make a Braid

Give a unique twist to the timeless classic drape with the Figure 8 style. Fold your scarf in two equal halves, creating a loop at one end. Pass the other end through the loop to create a knot-like shape. Next, twist and slip the loop over your head and adjust the loop’s size. Continue twisting the braid until there’s no scarf left. The Figure 8 scarf style can add dimension to any formal or semi-formal outfit.

Wear a Neck-Tie

Channel your inner Parisian by trying the neck-tie style. Fold the scarf into a triangle and roll it lengthwise to create a sleek band. Wrap it around your neck, tying the ends in a simple knot. This look pairs seamlessly with button-down shirts or flowy blouses, adding a touch of sophistication to your ensemble.

Note: I find this styling technique to work best with a square scarf.

Tie It with a Belt

One of the best things about scarves is that they can be paired with all kinds of accessories from hats to belts. Wrap the scarf around your neck. Make sure both sides are even. Next, tie a contrasting belt over your scarf near the waistline to accentuate your figure. This scarf styling technique can add a pop of color to any outfit. Pair a vibrant scarf with a long shirt or monochrome dress for a chic boho-inspired look.
